Almost every single member of my family is on Facebook except for my parents. They are technophobes and steadfastly old-fashioned, in a lovable way.
Recently my cousin started planning a family reunion over Facebook which meant my parents didn't hear about it until I mentioned it. The conversation went something like this:
Me: "Mom, did you hear Shelley is planning -"
Mom: "Is it one of those Facebook things?"
Me: "Um, yes."
Mom: "Then I don't want to hear about it! She can call me if she wants to tell me about it!"
I was a bit surprised. It never occurred to me that non-FB users would be offended by being "out of the loop." But does that mean everyone should should cater to non-FB users and pick up the phone or that my mom should get a Facebook? I don't have an answer to that, but I do know for certain that my mom will NEVER get on Facebook, so maybe the point is moot!
I had this happen once, we got an invitation in the mail for a baby shower, the date got changed over facebook and so my mom and I ended up showing up on the wrong date because we didn't have facebook. Not that I think it is a bad form of communication, but is it really too hard to pick up the phone to call a family member...it really shouldn't be.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting. My sister is the same way about blogs!
